Our Story
How It All Began...
The Ikowé Amazônia was born from the dream of two musicians, Carla Ruaro and Gustavo Roriz, to create a space where art, culture, and nature could exist in perfect harmony. It all started in 2021, when the couple acquired a simple house. As they renovated it, they also brought to life cultural projects for the local community. Over time, their vision expanded: in 2023, with the construction of two charming chalets, they began welcoming resident artists and travelers seeking inspiration and connection with the forest.
The dream grew even stronger in 2024, with the acquisition of a new property near the original house. This expansion included a legendary space — the Maloca- the first retreat center in Alter do Chão, which had been abandoned for years. Under the artists' direction, the Maloca was restored and reborn in 2025, opening its doors for retreats, cultural immersions, and unforgettable experiences in the heart of the Amazon.
Who We Are
Carla Ruaro and Gustavo Roriz are artists, musicians, and cultural producers with remarkable international careers. After spending over 20 years abroad, living in countries such as England, Portugal, Italy, Spain, the USA, and Japan, they decided to create a space where art, culture, and nature come together.
Today, they divide their time between London and Alter do Chão,fostering transformative experiences and connecting artists from around the world to the rich culture and essence of the Amazon.
